THIRD SECTION – Friday 28 November to Sunday 1 December 2003 Dreilaender to Diekirch along E2 and GR5/E2/E3 which follow same route – 187 Km (593Km).

Entered Luxembourg at Dreilaender by the River Our which we followed through the forest as it twisted and turned in the valley. Brown-leaved paths first on narrow cliff paths and then by the side of the river. Frost coating trees and plants. Rocky outcrops, sweeping forest trails, hilly and tiring. Through Obereisenbach and up to Waldhausen at 500m where the cold was biting on the high (500M) lands. Unable to see Vianden Castle for the mist but the town has a spectacular mediaeval centre on the steep river slopes. Finished with quiet roads and paths to Diekirch over the hill where the Germans surprised the American defenders to launch the Battle of the Bulge in WW2. The defensive positions can still be seen.>/p>

FOURTH SECTION Friday 5 to Wednesday 10 March 2004 Diekirch to Schengen along E3 - 172 Km (765Km).

Made half day visit to the Battle of the Bulge Museum in Diekirch - well presented account of the campaign which added to our understanding of the area and we were able to identify the places described. Set off along Sauer River across which the German troops had silently rowed to overwhelm the unsuspecting American defences to create the 'bulge' break-through against the advancing Allies in 1944. Climbed to 400m through lovely forest to the escarpment over the river with old gun emplacements. Wooded trails and lovely small river valleys in deep-cut sandstone and chalk with eco-climate systems of high humidity, mosses, rotting trees, birds – woodpeckers, bats - overgrown ferns – v beautiful, especially Gorge du Coup. This is a geological break in the western European landmass from the Atlantic coast. Woodpeckers, bats and hares. Very tiring walking. Followed the Sauer for two days to the first vineyards and the Moselle at Wasserbillig. Meandering pretty route through woods and along streams. Vineyards on both sides of the river all the way along. From Grevenmacher followed well-walked routes at 200-250m above and through the wineyards with clear views of the Moselle below. Snowed on and off. Very cold: -2C plus a wind chill. Farmers cutting vines back in bare hands– hard, cold work. Crossed the River Moselle near Schengen at the junction of Luxembourg, France and Germany.
